Basic Tournament Questions

 

How do I get a DCI card?

 

You can sign-up for a DCI number at the event.

 

What does modified swiss-style play mean?

 

It means the the winners play the winners and the losers play other players with similar records in the tournament until we reach a point that we can do a cut to the finals.

 

What is Sealed Deck?

 

It means that you must build a deck out of the cards given to you at the tournament.

 

What is constructed format?

 

You build a deck out of the cards that you own. You construct your own deck.

 

Are there any specific rules for proxying cards?

 

DCI Floor Rule 34: Proxy Cards--Players are not permitted to create a proxy.

 

Do we have to sign up in advance for the tournament?

 

No, you can just walk in and register at the tournament.


Cheating and Fair Play

 

How do you handle cheating?

 

We do deck registration and deck checks during a tournament. For deck registration a player must record all of the cards in his deck and turn that list in. Then during the tournament we perform random deck checks to verify that a player is conforming to the rules of fair play.

 

What happens if you get caught cheating?

 

The least thing that will happen to you is disqualification from the tournament. DCI review and further penalties may be assessed.

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following intentional activities:

  •  Receiving or giving outside assistance

  •  Looking at opponents’ card faces while shuffling or cutting their decks

  •  Collusion to alter the results of a game or match (see section 25)

  •  Misrepresenting cards or rules

  • Using marked cards/sleeves (see section 44)

  •  Drawing extra cards

  •  Illegally manipulating which cards are drawn from a player’s deck or his or her opponent’s deck

  • Stalling the length of a turn to take advantage of a time limit

  • Misrepresenting public information (point totals, statistics of cards in play, number of cards in a deck, and so on)

  • Giving false or misleading information to a judge or tournament official.

What is Unsporting Conduct?

 

Unsporting conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at any time. Judges, players, spectators, and tournament officials must behave in a polite, respectable, and sporting manner. Unsporting conduct includes, but is not limited to , using profanity, arguing with or act belligerently toward tournament officials, players or spectators, harassing spectators, tournament officials, or opponents, or failure to follow the instructions of a tournament official. All incidents of unsporting conduct are subject to the appropriate provisions of the DCI Penalty Guidelines and to further DCI Review

 


Prerelease Tournaments

 

What is a tournament flight?

 

 We get a large number of people at each prerelease, and it is easier if we break the tournament up into smaller groups. Each tournament flight is one group out of the whole tournament.

 

Can I play in more than one tournament flight?

 

Sure, we run tournament flights all day long at the prereleases.

 

What is the Special Commemorative Prerelease Card?

 

The Special Commemorative Card is a foil rare card from the set that is featured at the prerelease. It also has the date of the prerelease in foil on it. Special commemorative  card for each tournament participant, while supplies last
